Tutorial: SEO Basics

AKA Search Engine Optimization. We’re only tackling the basics here because 1) I don’t believe in playing games with Google bots, and 2) Any well designed and written webpage will by default have strong SEO, which is the case with your site.

These are best practices to keep in mind...

When adding a new page:

  • Pay attention to Page Titles, Navigation Titles, and URL slugs, especially if you’re duplicating from an existing page — your new page will likely be titled something along the lines of “About (Copy)” and have the URL like /about-2. It just doesn’t look great, and it’s not ideal for SEO, so do your best to correct those little snafus.

  • Within the SEO section of the panel, add a short 50-300 character description of the new page. It’s not required, but if you want to be specific in detailing what’s on that particular page, this will be what shows up in search engine previews.

When adding a new image:

  • Give images proper titles, ie: “Megan headshot” instead of “IMG_2045”.

  • Add a short description to Image Alt Text if you feel up to it. This is not a requirement, images titles are far more important.
